Solomon Islands tsunami - Pelena Express

Peter Lynch tells us he has just received this photo from the Solomon Islands tsunami in April last year. It shows the Pelena Express vessel assisting the Red Cross to deliver relief supplies to remote villages.

He further says: I believe the photo demonstrates very well the ability of the boat to access village beachfronts – near to where most people reside. The country of Solomon Islands consists of almost 1000 islands with more than 80% of people residing in rural areas across the archipelago.

I have just returned from Solomon Islands. The boat is presently providing a valuable daily transport service in the Gizo, Kolombangara, Vonuvonu, Noro, and Munda areas. The crew is performing outstandingly, and a job with Pelena is sought after. I believe the majority local ownership is a key feature.

Additional boats remains the aim, but accessing finance remains the challenge. We are very encouraged by the enthusiasm of the Solomon Islands Government to work more closely with Pelena. Additionally, we are very enthused by the direction and attitude of the new Australian Government.
